The fort is located on Trikuta Hills and offers mesmerizing views of the surroundings. It is the second oldest fort of Rajasthan. When the sunrays fall on this yellow sandstone fort, the fort shimmers like gold. The fort is a perfect amalgamation of Rajput and Mughal architecture and is truly a treat to the eyes. The fortified fort of Jaisalmer boasts of three layers of walls which were made for defense purposes. The fort is 255 feet tall with 99 bastions. The outer layer of the wall was built with blocks of solid stones. The second wall encircles the entire fort and the third wall (innermost one) was the last part of the defense mechanism. The Rajput warriors would throw boiling oil and water and huge rocks on their enemies trapped between the second and the third walls for defense purpose.
Also visit the palaces of the Maharawals which are located near the fort. The two main attractions of the palaces of Maharawals are Maharawal's marble throne and the five storied Tazia (metal) Tower built in Bengali style and wonderful carvings.
